Rubicon vs Hard Rock Rubicon

There is a $5k difference between the Rubicon and Hard Rock Rubicon.

What are the technical differences and are they worth the $5k?

They lay it out pretty well in the brochures and on the website.

At a glance:

Mechanical

* Steel front and rear bumpers

Electrical

* Standard Connectivity Group (EVIC, Bluetooth, Tire Pressure/Engine Data display)
* Alpine 9 Speaker Premium Sound w/ weather resistant Sub

Cosmetic

* Power Dome Hood (with Vents and Drainage)
* Standard Heated Leather Seats
* Different Color Wheels (Black instead of Gray)
* Red Tow Hooks

Is it worth it? Only you can say that. But I bet if you added up all the extras as individual options and accessories it would come to more. At least most companies are usually smart enough to do that.

I mised the part about bumpers being steel. I wonder if a winch can easily be mounted inside the front steel bumper.

The rest are features that don't make the HR Rubi any more capable then the standard Rubi it seems to me.

I hear ya, but it fully depends on what capability you're talking about.

Crawling, nope?

Keeping Momma happy in the heated leather passenger seat, YUP (in my case).

All depends on your wants.

That's why I just ordered a Willys in disguise (A Sahara with most of the mechanical upgrades from the Willys, lol).

Yes - you need a special mount plate and have to be careful with winch selection (not all will fit) but it's a nice clean look when completed.

Pretty much the HR is a hopped up version of the Rubicon. You don't have to replace the plastic bumpers, and you get some interior nicies. Like someone said, the cost increase is up to you.

Also, you get a steel air dam under the front bumper which offers a little(?) more protection to the disco motor. The bumpers are made by a company called Maximus 3 and you can go to their web site and look at goodies designed to bolt on. Oh, you should also get a Warn winch kit from the dealer (you may have to ask for it) when you pick up your Hard Rock. It has a strap, gloves, couple of d-rings, and a carry bag. You get the cool MT type floor mats, standard. The HR rock rails are tubed out a couple of inches. Just short enough to not be a useful step. That's about all I can think of now.

The hard rock is essentially the same as the 10th anniversary and the Rubi X. If you are the .001% of buyers that plans to leave his Jeep bone stock, but take it off-road regularly, then I see how it makes sense. Outside of that, worthless.

Don't plan to take it offroad? Then you don't want a Rubicon at all.

Plan to upgrade? Then join the 95% who bought one of the above models and sold off almost everything that $5k package came with. The rock sliders are still a joke. It's around $750 to get a tire swing for the rear bumper and it's a terrible design. The rear bumper integrates with the fenders, so get any new fender and it looks terrible.

Installing a winch in the front bumper will make you want to knock yourself out (this is all from personal experience, btw). The front bumper literally falls apart at the sight of a trail. It's a real POS. But hey, you get a really cool looking hood that you could buy for $700.

Trail bag is also crap. Get a real recovery kit. And the steel front air dam... Lost a good cutoff wheel to that tin crap.

A little harsh arent you and where do you get those ridiculous % figures from?

The Rubicon is a great platform to start from. For those that are wanting extreme axles and really huge tires and such then yes, its probably best to forgo a Rubi and build to your hearts content. Other than that I think you are way off base.

You know his % numbers are made up. Pretty much any jeeper that comes here modifies their jeep in some way. The HR Rubi seems like it could be a great starting point even though it's definitely at the top of the scale because of the upgrades it comes standard with. Yes I like interior upgrades that don't make the jeep any more capable also. Being older, I have grown accustomed to creature comforts.

here's a pretty amazing statistic to wrap your head around - 100% of all jeep owners own a jeep! this isn't a made up number, I can proof it.

I like the HR Rubion, especially the hook.

2008 JK Rubicon - sold
2012 KK Liberty - sold (sadly)
