Looking to get a ride to commute back and forth to work 10 miles each way but off road on weekends hard and fun. If I do get it going to buy second set of wheels one set dirt and one set road.
Any thoughts would be helpful please?

I have a 520 from 2000 that I curently use for commuting for 15 km per day in the city with the SM wheels and in the weekend I use it for hard enduro here in Romania. Works just fine.
I think the new 450 is a better balanced bike than the old exc and it`s a good deal for this kind of thing.

check ktmtalk for info on the new exc's. there's not a lot of guys on here that ride new exc's so chances are you won't find a lot of info here. I'm still waiting on my 530 so can't tell you anything as well 
there seem to be a couple of issues that might pop up on some bikes but it's kinda weird, all the guys experiencing problems seem to be in the US or australia. over here I checked with 8 450 and 530 owners and none of them has had problems so far. I was actually getting a bit paranoid reading all the stuff on ktmtalk but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Good bike, my roommate's dad has the same one.
Lots of good weekend dirt rides, and lots of running around on the street (with knobbies).

Ive got an 08 450 exc-r that i ride everyday to work, about the same distance as you.... and its a kick in the ass! I love it!!! Ive got about 320mi on it and the rear tire is about gone. I just recently ordered my SM setup and should be here this thursday so i cant wait to really see what this thing can do!!!
Edit: One thing i reccomend changing is the seat! Get a soft one
